Norman’s Summer Breeze Concert Series is back again the year with a full slew of acts, every other Sunday in Lion’s Park at the corner of Flood and Symmes from May 18-Sept. 7, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The concert series is free to the public and features local and national acts. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and relax with the family for a great night of tunes. The series kicked off this year with performances by The Giving Tree and Salsa Shakers Band. Check out the rest of this year’s lineup:
The duo of Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe make up honeyhoney, a mixture of classic country tradition and a young and reckless edginess. Hits like “Angel of Death” have a familiar and soothing feel, with soft vocals and acoustic guitar melodies, offering a sweet, sweet contrast to the hint of bitterness found nestled deep within the lyrics.
The Red Dirt Rangers are a product of Stillwater and have been keeping the tradition of red dirt music alive in Oklahoma since the late 1980’s. This year marks the band’s 25th anniversary together, and they are bound to be one of the biggest acts of the series. Brad Piccolo, John Cooper, and Ben Han have been through it all, even surviving a near-fatal helicopter crash in the summer of 2004. Come early for these three Oklahoma legends; it’s gonna be a full house!
July 13-The John Arnold Band
The John Arnold Band is an Oklahoma staple of country, swing, bluegrass, rock, and more. They’ve toured across the U.S. with Ricky Skaggs and Exile, and are Dodge-Wrangler Country Showdown winners. The band started when John Arnold was named Male Vocalist of the Year at the Oklahoma Opry in 1980, and they’ve been touring nationally ever since.
July 27-Larry Mitchell Trio
Larry Mitchell, a Grammy award winning producer, engineer, and performer, heads up this trio, who blends rock, jazz, blues, and funk. The band also features two Berklee School of Music graduates in Russ Garner (drums) and Austin Solomon (bass). Whether Mithcell is belting out a searing guitar solo or breaking down an inspired funky rhythm, the talent that won him the San Diego Music Award for best pop jazz artist is clear for all to see.
The Sunday Flyers are one of Norman’s own, made up of Gregg Standridge, Michael McCarty, Mark McCarty, Bob French, Chris Babcock, and Gates “Gator” Miskovsky. These guys are classic rock, through and through, and songs like “Five Feet Away,” “Van Dream,” or “Lucky Johnson” will prove it. Cruise on over to their website for a ton of videos and updates.
August 24-The Handsome Devils
The Handsome Devils are another local product of Norman. Twins Devon and Derek Caruthers and Derek Paul have been picking up a lot of steam here in town, even making some TV appearances. It’s always great to see local talent on the Summer Breeze Concert Series, so go out and support the local guys!
September 7- Kim Lenz and the Jaguars
Kim Lenz, an L.A. based rockabilly superstar, has been working hard to craft her style since 1998. Since that time, she has released three albums, including two under one of the most influential labels in the industry, Hightone Records. She has also been touring, hundreds of shows all over the world, and will soon add Norman to the list.
